Representations of a female pop artist

Artists are always represented in certain ways, creating a certain image, to attract a certain audience. In generic pop videos there are different representations for each gender. For a male they are portrayed as brave, sometimes mean, and rarely smile. They are shown as the tough guy. For females they are portrayed sexually, flaunting their figures and showing what they have to offer, an example of this is on the right where Christina Aguilera is wearing little clothing and posing sexually. This creates a fan base of certain groups of people. General target audiences for pop videos for female solo artists would be teenage girls and boys as the girls would want to be like them and the boys would be attracted to their image as they are shown to be conventionally attractive.

These artists represent the glamorous lifestyle of a celebrity. Everything they do in their video is glamorised creating a positive image to have a pop star lifestyle. Females use seductive poses which adds to their image of a pop star. Usually the location would either be a party to show the fun carefree lifestyle or a deserted location for example a beach which is shown as glamorous and usually a female would be in her bikini, creating a sexual image. This is used because revealing outfits are one of the main aspects of a female pop artist’s image. They are showing off what they have in order to have a successful pop video attracting many different target audiences of both males and females. Voyeurism is a recurring theme in a pop video, it is used to attract audiences, usually males, and it also keeps to the genre of the music. Dancing is a key theme in a pop music video as the music is upbeat and fast paced, the location is usually suitable for people to be dancing, creating this fun positive image.

All of these representations are used to entertain and attract audiences. They usually have a positive happy tone to them, creating more popularity. They use all of these representations to meet the needs of the audiences and giving them what they want to see.

The female representation is contrasted with the representations of a male pop artist as they are shown completly different. They are shown in a more positive point of view, showing them to be brave and the 'cool guy', they are not oppressed negatively like women are. They are not just shown for their looks.
